Materials List

  • 2x4 lumber (pressure-treated)
  • 1x4 lumber (pressure-treated)
  • 1/2-inch plywood (exterior grade)
  • Hardware cloth (1/2-inch mesh)
  • Asphalt shingles
  • Nails
  • Screws
  • Door hinges
  • Window
  • Chicken coop bedding
  • Nest boxes
  • Waterer
  • Feeder

Tools Required

  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Hammer
  • Screwdriver
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Safety glasses

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Build the Frame

  1. Cut the 2x4s to length for the frame of the coop. You will need four pieces for the sides (each 8 feet long) and two pieces for the front and back (each 6 feet long).
  2. Assemble the frame by nailing or screwing the 2x4s together at the corners. Make sure the frame is square by measuring the diagonals and ensuring they are equal.

Step 2: Cover the Frame with Plywood

  1. Cut the plywood to fit the sides and back of the coop. Nail or screw the plywood to the frame, making sure the edges are flush.
  2. Cut a piece of plywood for the front of the coop, ensuring that it is large enough to accommodate the door and window.

Step 3: Install the Hardware Cloth

  1. Cut the hardware cloth to fit the front and back of the coop, leaving a few inches of overlap on all sides.
  2. Staple or nail the hardware cloth to the plywood, making sure it is taut.

Step 4: Install the Roof

  1. Cut the 2x4s to length for the rafters of the roof. You will need four pieces for a gable roof, or two pieces for a flat roof.
  2. Assemble the rafters by nailing or screwing them together at the top. If you are building a gable roof, cut the rafters at a 45-degree angle at the top to create the peak.
  3. Install the rafters on the frame of the coop, spacing them evenly.
  4. Cover the rafters with plywood and nail or screw it in place.
  5. Install asphalt shingles on the roof according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 5: Install the Door and Window

  1. Cut the 1x4s to length for the door and window frames. Nail or screw the 1x4s together to form the frames.
  2. Attach the door and window frames to the front of the coop using hinges and screws.
  3. Install the door and window.

Step 6: Furnish the Coop

  1. Add chicken coop bedding to the floor of the coop.
  2. Place nest boxes in the corners of the coop.
  3. Install a waterer and feeder in the coop.

Tips for Success

  • Use pressure-treated lumber for all outdoor components of the coop to prevent rot and decay.
  • Make sure the coop is well-ventilated to prevent ammonia buildup from chicken waste.
  • Provide plenty of perches for the chickens to roost on.
  • Clean the coop regularly to keep it clean and healthy for your chickens.

Congratulations! You have now successfully built a chicken coop in a weekend. With a little time and effort, you can provide your chickens with a comfortable and safe home where they can thrive and lay plenty of eggs for you and your family to enjoy.
