Humble Beginnings

Hugo Koblet was born in 1925 in a small village in the Swiss Alps. From a young age, he showed a prodigious talent for cycling, and by the time he was 18, he had already won several local races. Ferdy Kubler, on the other hand, was born in 1924 in Zurich. His early life was marked by hardship, and he had to work as a baker's apprentice to help support his family. However, he also discovered his love of cycling at a young age, and he quickly rose through the ranks of the Swiss amateur scene.

The Rivalry Begins

The first time Koblet and Kubler met in competition was in 1946, in a race in Switzerland. Koblet won that race, and the rivalry between the two cyclists began in earnest. The Tour de France

The Tour de France is the most prestigious cycling race in the world, and it was on the roads of the Tour that Koblet and Kubler's rivalry reached its peak. Koblet won the Tour in 1951, becoming the first Swiss rider to do so. Kubler finished second that year, and he would go on to win the Tour himself in 1954.

He would continue to race for a few more years, but he never quite reached the same heights again. He retired from cycling in 1960, and he died in 2016 at the age of 92.
