The History of the Ducs de Guise 1496-1588, Subsequently Taken to the Year 1671 is a fascinating account of one of the most powerful and influential families in French history. The book follows the Guise family from their humble beginnings in Lorraine to their rise to power in the French court. It explores the family's involvement in the Wars of Religion and their eventual downfall. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in French history or the history of the nobility.

The Early Years

The Guise family originated in the small town of Joinville, in the province of Lorraine. The family's founder, Claude de Guise, was a minor nobleman who served as a chamberlain to the Duke of Lorraine. Claude's son, René II, was a more ambitious man. He married Antoinette de Bourbon, the daughter of the Duke of Vendôme, and became a powerful figure at the French court. René's son, François, was the first Duc de Guise. He was a brilliant military commander who played a leading role in the French victory at the Battle of Marignano in 1515.

The Rise to Power

François de Guise's son, Charles, was an even more powerful figure than his father. He was a ruthless and ambitious man who used his influence to advance the interests of his family. Charles played a leading role in the Wars of Religion, which began in 1562. He was assassinated in 1563 by a Huguenot fanatic. Charles's brother, Henri, succeeded him as Duc de Guise. Henri was a more moderate man than his brother, but he was still a powerful figure in French politics. He was assassinated in 1588 by Free Download of King Henry III.

The Downfall

The assassination of Henri de Guise marked the beginning of the decline of the House of Guise. The family's power was further weakened by the death of Charles de Guise, the son of Henri III, in 1640. The last Duc de Guise, Louis Joseph, died in 1671. The House of Guise had come to an end.

The Legacy of the House of Guise

The House of Guise was one of the most powerful and influential families in French history. The family's members played a leading role in the Wars of Religion and in the political life of France. The House of Guise's legacy is a mixed one. The family was responsible for much bloodshed and violence. However, the family also produced some of France's greatest military commanders and statesmen. The House of Guise is a reminder of the complex and often tragic history of France.
